Getting started
Add 4K Screen Recorder to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store.
Pin it for quick access: click the Extensions puzzle-piece icon in the Chrome toolbar, then the pin next to 4K Screen Recorder.
Click the 4K Screen Recorder icon and choose Browser Tab, Screen or Window, or Selected Area.
Choose your resolution, frame rate, audio, microphone, webcam and other recording preferences.
Click Start Recording. When you stop, preview the video, make edits and export it to your device.
Recording a screen or window? Chrome opens its own sharing dialog. Pick what you want to share and click Share to begin.
Recording
Chrome asks me to choose what to share. Is that normal?
Yes. When you record your Screen or Window, Chrome shows its own secure sharing dialog. Choose the screen or window you want to capture and click Share. The extension can only record the source you select there.
Tab recording doesn't start on some pages.
Chrome restricts extensions on certain pages, such as chrome:// settings pages and the Chrome Web Store. If a tab recording won't start on one of these pages, use Screen or Window recording instead, or try a regular webpage.
My recording stopped earlier than expected.
The free plan limits recording length by resolution: 4K UHD up to 10 seconds, 2K QHD up to 30 seconds and Full HD up to 1 minute. Pro removes these limits. See Free vs Pro.
Why are 60 FPS and Selected Area locked?
60 FPS recording and Selected Area recording are Pro features. The free plan includes 30 FPS recording plus Browser Tab and Screen or Window recording.
My 4K recording looks soft or choppy.
Recording quality depends on the source, Chrome and your computer. A few things usually help:
- Detail is limited by the source. A window or display smaller than 3840 × 2160 can't add detail that isn't there.
- Close heavy tabs and apps you don't need while recording.
- On a laptop, plug in the charger so the device isn't in a power-saving mode.
- Try 2K QHD or Full HD, or 30 FPS instead of 60 FPS, for a lighter recording.
How do I pause, resume or stop a recording?
Use the live recording controls shown while you record. You can pause and resume without starting a new recording, then stop when you're finished to preview, edit and export.
Audio & webcam
My recording has no tab or system audio.
Make sure the audio option is turned on in the recorder before you start. When recording a screen or window, check that audio sharing is enabled in Chrome's sharing dialog. Whether system audio is available depends on your operating system and the source you choose.
My microphone isn't being recorded.
Turn on Microphone before you start recording and allow access when Chrome asks. Then check that:
- The correct microphone is selected as your input device in your operating system.
- Your operating system allows Chrome to use the microphone (Windows: Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone; macOS: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone).
- The microphone isn't muted on the device itself.
My webcam doesn't appear in the recording.
Turn on Webcam before recording and allow camera access when Chrome asks. If the camera is in use by another app, such as a video call, close that app and try again. Also check that your operating system allows Chrome to use the camera.
I blocked camera or microphone access by mistake.
Open chrome://settings/content/camera or chrome://settings/content/microphone in Chrome, remove 4K Screen Recorder from the blocked list, then start a new recording and allow access when prompted.
Editing & export
Where are my recordings stored?
Recordings are stored temporarily and locally inside the extension so you can preview, edit, save or delete them. Nothing is uploaded to an external recording server. Export a recording to save it to your device.
Why did I get a WebM file instead of MP4?
The recorder prefers MP4 where your browser supports it. If MP4 isn't available for the recording, it uses WebM as a compatibility fallback. Keeping Chrome up to date gives you the best chance of MP4 support.
Which editing tools are free?
Trim & Stitch is available on the free plan. The advanced editor, including captions, overlays, branding, color controls, annotations and thumbnail tools, is available with Pro.
I can't find my exported video.
Open Chrome's Downloads page (Ctrl + J on Windows and ChromeOS, ⌘ + Shift + J on Mac) to see recent downloads and open the folder where the file was saved.
Plans & Pro
What's included in the free plan?
The free plan includes Browser Tab and Screen or Window recording, 30 FPS, Trim & Stitch, and 4K UHD (up to 10 seconds), 2K QHD (up to 30 seconds) and Full HD (up to 1 minute) recording.
What does Pro add?
Pro removes the recording length limits and adds 60 FPS, Selected Area recording and the advanced editor: captions, overlays, branding tools, color controls, annotations and thumbnail tools. Compare plans.
I purchased Pro but features are still locked.
Please contact support and include the email address you used for your purchase so we can look into it.
Privacy & data
Are my recordings uploaded anywhere?
No. 4K Screen Recorder processes recordings locally in your Chrome browser. It does not upload your screen recordings, webpage content, microphone audio, webcam video or browsing content to an external recording server.
What happens to my recordings if I remove the extension?
Removing the extension may delete recordings that are still stored inside it. Export any recording you want to keep before you remove the extension.
Where can I read the privacy policy?
Read the full Privacy Policy for details on how 4K Screen Recorder handles data.
